Re-visiting 1st year work

I re- visited some of the boards that I produced in the 1st year, to make them look more professional. I also wanted to tweak them slightly so  they were good enough to put in my portfolio.
Here's the board that I have done...

We are We are We are the MODS!

I have always been Obsessed with the 1960's, the music, the fashion and the care-free spirit. But I wanted to know more which is great when I found out that one of my assignments at uni was to a presentation on either culture, gender, identity or branding. I chose to do mine on Culture and identity sort of; I chose the subculture of the mods. This was a great assignment as I learnt so much about this subculture and what was happening at the time in 60's

Mod style transport... VESPA

Mods were one of the first breed of teenager, before this young people were just dressing how their parents wanted them to dress, which was usually in similar attire to what they were wearing. it wasn't really until the rock and roll period in the late 50's that young people started rebelling , in particular against their parents.

The mods neat but sharp understated style was their own way of making sure they were opposite to their rivals the rockers. Mods were rarely seen without a tailor made suit, this was like a second skin to them. Button down shirts with skinny ties, polo shirts as well as a parka were also things that mods were rarely seen without. Many of these styles were influenced by Italian fashions which they saw in American movies and music videos.

Student Conference: The Trend Boutique

Last week I went to Nottingham (The Broadway cinema)  for a student conference with the trend boutique. The student conference has been running for 12 years. It started in 2000 when the industry started  overseas.

The day itself was interesting, it was split in to 5 industry speakers. The day was based mainly around Eco friendly, sustainable fashion and design for the future which I found this really inspiring.
I was very interested mainly about the future A/W 13,14 trends that I was being informed about, I just wanted to leave the conference there and start designing. I am ridiculousness excited by new trends, its something that helps fuel my passion.

All walks beyond the catwalk

All walks beyond the catwalk: Diversity NOW! is a student competition in association with I.D magazine.

"we believe Diversity can enhance creativity not impede it. Like the multitude of silhouettes our industry creates, beauty is also individual, is not restricted by age, shape, skin tone or size"

For the competition  I have to submit one dress design that celebrates and embraces the diversity of the body as well as a tech pack  including a Mood board, customer profile, working drawing and illustration, As well as a typed statement of who my dress is design for.

My dress is for the tall, curvy women  in her mid 20's. She finds it difficult to find clothes that fit her correctly as they are usually to short in length or to tight around the tummy. So I have designed a dress that will make her feel more confident in herself.

Finished toile

Just a quick post to show my finished toile. See my post about all walks beyond the catwalk to have a look at my designs and illustration for this dress.

Even though this is only the toile for the final dress, I have really enjoyed  pattern cutting and manufacturing it more than I thought it would. Ive really pushed myself this year, to create something I never thought I could. I mean this time last year I was only able to make a 1/2 scale jacket and even that was a struggle. I have defiantly come on so far since then.
